England captain Jos Buttler reacted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) strict diktat against Indian players following their 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, which meant they lost a Test series to the Pat Cummins-led side after 10 years and failed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
For those unversed, the Indian cricket governing body held a review meeting after the disastrous Test season, which was attended by skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. A few days later, they issued a 10-point diktat with restrictions on families of players, the most talked-about issue.
The BCCI issued a directive that family members can stay with players for a maximum of two weeks on a tour that is 45 days or longer while wives and children of players can only stay with them for one week on shorter tours.
Ahead of the first T20I between India and England in Kolkata, Buttler was asked about India's strict action against the players and denied claims that families being around the players affected their performances. The 2022 T20 World Cup-winning captain claimed it was important for players to have their families around them to lighten their load.
"...that's a loaded question, isn't it. I think it's important. We live in a day and age now, which is a very modern world, and I think it's great to be able to have families on the tour with you and try and enjoy that. There's a lot of cricket, people spend a long time away from home, and I think post-COVID all that's been highlighted as well. Absolutely, I don't think it affects the cricket too much," said Buttler in a press conference.
"I think it's something that is very manageable. Personally, from my point of view, I think it's really important to try and be able to share that with your family and lighten the load on being away from home," the England skipper added.
England are touring India for a five-match T20I series which will be followed by three ODIs, which will be the final assignment for both teams before the 2025 Champions Trophy.
