India skipper Rohit Sharma will be accompanied by his fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in Mumbai's upcoming Ranji Trophy game against Jammu and Kashmir after the duo were named in the squad on Monday for the domestic competition. This will be Rohit's first appearance in the tournament after over a decade, although Jaiswal has played in the Ranji Trophy till 2023.
The Mumbai Ranji Trophy team will continue to be led by the seasoned Ajinkya Rahane, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) said while announcing the team on Monday. Mumbai is currently third in Group A and desperately needs the win to get closer to a knockout berth.
Rohit confirmed his participation in the next round of the Ranji Trophy game on Saturday, January 18, during a press conference to announce India's teams for limited overs series against England and the Champions Trophy in February.
"(In) the last 6-7 years, I can at least tell about what has happened with me since I've started playing Test cricket regularly, which is from 2019, you hardly have any time (in hand)," Rohit told the media.
"And then, when you play so much international cricket through the year, you need some time off as well as a cricketer just to refresh, get your mind right, just to be ready for the upcoming season," Rohit added.
Soon after the India skipper showed up for a training session in Mumbai last week, Jaiswal also joined the camp which trained at the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground as he had some batting sessions with his domestic side.
BCCI made it compulsory for all contracted India players to take part in domestic cricket except when there are fitness problems.
Compulsory domestic cricket, restriction on the presence of families and personal staff on tours and a bar on individual endorsements during series were among a slew of measures that BCCI unveiled last Thursday in a 10-point policy to promote discipline in the embattled national cricket side.
