India allrounder Axar Patel has said that he was not with the national team for the last three months and doesn't know what happened in Australia regarding the support staff, but the same individuals are working with the T20I team at the moment and there have been no issues. BCCI, disappointed with the support staff's inability to correct mistakes, hired Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach, rendering Abhishek Nayar's role on a sticky wicket.
Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate were brought into the group at head coach Gautam Gambhir's behest amidst the transition in the coaching staff. With Kotak being roped in as batting coach and T Dilip the acting fielding coach, there is some doubt over Nayar and Ten Doeschate's roles.
Axar said that there were no problems regarding the support staff when it came to the white-ball scheme of things.
"Regarding support staff, I wasn't with the team for the last three months so I don't know what happened in Australia but here the support staff is the same and we have been discussing what we want to do in matches," Axar told the media ahead of the first T20I against England in Kolkata.
"Whatever inputs we want, we talk to the batting or bowling coach accordingly. In T20Is, it is a fast game, so we talk about important decisions quickly, so that’s what we talk about, what my (or anyone’s) role is," Axar added.
Axar wasn't named in the team for the tour of Australia, with India naming three spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. Even after the former announced his retirement midway through the tour, Tanush Kotian was flown into Australia and not Axar, after he became a father recently.
Axar was not disappointed when he did not make the cut for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy as it wasn't meant to be. Instead, he concentrated on a T20I series in South Africa where he played all the matches.
