Karun Nair has had a memorable run in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy season. The Vidarbha captain has piled up 752 runs in only 7 innings and smashed plenty of records. Nair, who last played for India in 2017, has come up with these performances just before the BCCI is set to name the squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Nair would be hopeful of making a sensational India comeback for the ICC event but he is reportedly set to miss out on a spot in the national team. India Today has reported that Nair will not be picked in the national team for the ICC event.
As per India Today, the selectors feel that it would be unwise to go back to Nair. Nair is 33 and played his last game for India in 2017. He played 2 ODIs under MS Dhoni's captaincy against Zimbabwe in 2016.
Nair will surely be in the scheme of things but an India comeback in the ODI format looks unlikely for him. He would be hopeful of making it to the Test squad. Given Indian batsmen's struggles in Australia, Nair could be on his way back to Team India in the longest format.
Nair scored 374 runs in six Test matches before getting dropped. The second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to slam a triple-century in Tests, Nair was dropped from the playing XI after the home series against Australia in 2017.
He travelled with the team to England in 2018 before losing his spot in the Test team. He lost his spot in Karnataka's Ranji Trophy team in 2022. Nair moved to Vidarbha before the next season.
His move to Vidarbha has done wonders for him and he is set to lead them in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Saturday (January 18). Interestingly, Vidarbha will be up against Karnataka in the final. The match will start at 1:30 PM IST.
