Has Abhishek Nayar Failed To Impress Gautam Gambhir In India Setup? Reports Suggest Coach Called For Kotak (Photo credit: BCCI)

Indian men's senior cricket team assistant coach Abhishek Nayar suddenly finds himself on a sticky wicket after BCCI added Sitanshu Kotak to the support staff. BCCI did not have a 'batting coach' under head coach Gautam Gambhir but reportedly, Nayar was discharging those duties during the last five months but now has been rendered to just an assistant coach.
During BCCI's review meeting, the role of the support staff was discussed and according to a report in The Times of India, Gambhir had asked for a specialist batting coach during a discussion with the top brass.
During the net sessions Down Under, Nayar was working with the players not in the playing XI and had long batting sessions with the lower order and bowlers. In Melbourne, Nayar worked on Mohammed Siraj's batting and had a long session with Shubman Gill, who was not in the playing XI, during the lunch break.
Even in Sydney, Nayar restricted himself to training the non-specialist batters during the team's sole practice session ahead of the New Year's Test.
The report says that BCCI's top brass also felt the requirement for a batting specialist and Kotak's addition is seen as an attempt to solve those problems. He has been part of the India A and the National Cricket Academy set-ups for a long time and has worked with several youngsters during the A tours.
India's coaching staff might be reviewed after the Champions Trophy and it wouldn't be a surprise if some members might be asked to leave. Gambhir, Nayar, Kotak, Ryan ten Doeschate, T Dilip and Morne Morkel are currently part of the coaching group and all of them might not travel to England during the five-Test series in June.
The top brass reportedly didn't make any big changes ahead of the Champions Trophy to ensure there is no knee-jerk reaction.
