KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • RCB fired a brutal dig at Ruturaj Gaikwad
  • Ruturaj struggled for form with the Vijay Hazare Trophy
  • Ruturaj's recent remark came to bite him
Days before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will announce India's squad for the ODI series against England and the 2025 Champions Trophy, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to make a strong case as his barren run of form continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy semi-final between Maharashtra and Vidarbha at the Kotambi Stadium in Baroda.
CSK's arch-rivals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), fired a dig at the 27-year-old, who departed after making just seven runs in 13 balls. Darshan Nalkande took his wicket after Ruturaj attempted to pull a short ball but failed to get a connection. Wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma took a brilliant running catch to end the Maharashtra skipper's stay at the crease.
For those unversed, Jitesh will play for RCB in the 2025 season of the IPL. The 31-year-old was purchased by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the mega auction that took place in November for a stunning value of Rs. 11 crore.
RCB praised Jitesh Sharma for his catch and took a dig at Ruturaj while referring to a statement made by him at a public event a few days ago.

Will Ruturaj Earn India Comeback?

Ruturaj, who last played for India in a T20I series against Zimbabwe in July, hurt his chances of making a comeback to the national team after a substandard display in the 2024-25 VHT. The star Indian batter made just 194 runs in seven innings at an average of 32.33 with one century and no other 50+ score.
Ruturaj has played 6 ODIs and 23 T20Is for India and led the country to a historic gold medal victory in the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The opening batter failed to make the squad for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and South Africa but led the Rest of India's squad in the 2024 Irani Cup and India 'A' team in the shadow tour of Australia.
Ruturaj appeared to be in the scheme of things for a Test call-up, but he was not part of the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a poor run with the bat in red-ball cricket.
