The 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) match between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes at the Gabba in Brisbane on Thursday (January 16) saw a shocking incident as a fire erupted in the stands, leading the match to be stopped for a few minutes.
The incident took place in the second innings of the match when the Hurricanes were batting. During the 5th over of the match, the game was brought to a halt by the umpires for a considerable amount of time as the cameras showed a spark emerging from near the DJ booth. A few fans had to be evacuated before play could start again.
However, there was no notable damage due to the fire and the organisers managed to stop the flames in time and avoid any spread

The match turned out to be a cracking clash that the visitors won in a last-ball thriller. Earlier, they won the toss and chose to bowl first. Heat put up a score of 201 on the board. Usman Khawaja gave them a quick start with a knock of 23 in just nine balls. Marnus Labuschagne was the star of the show with a dazzling knock of 77 in 44 balls. Matt Renshaw made a 25-ball 40 while Tom Aslop played an important cameo of 39 in just 27 balls.
In reply, an 80-run partnership of just 41 balls by Caleb Jawell and Michell Owen put them on the course of victory. Jewell made a 49-ball 76, and Owen made 44 runs in 20 balls. Nikhil Choudhary consolidated the innings with a knock of 39 in just 27 balls. Matthew Wade hit a six on the last ball to seal a memorable victory for the Hobart-based outfit.
The Hurricanes are top of the table with their seventh win in a row.
