Will Rohit Sharma Attend Champions Trophy Opening Ceremony In Pakistan? BCCI Secretary Provides Crucial Update (Source: AP)
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opening ceremony could be a low-key affair as the BCCI is unlikely to send its team to Pakistan for the event. The opening ceremony is set to take place one or two days before the first match and the PCB is planning to make it a grand success. There were reports that Indian captain Rohit Sharma could travel to Pakistan for the opening ceremony, however, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that they have not received any such proposal.
“We haven’t got any such proposal. This hasn’t been part of our discussions with the ICC,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told The Telegraph in response to Rohit Sharma’s visit to Pakistan on Wednesday.
There were a few reports which claimed the entire opening ceremony could be shifted to Dubai, however, a source close to the development feels that the chances of it happening are very low
“This is a very delicate situation and every step has to be taken after judging its repercussions. India have to find a compromise formula to solve the crisis since Pakistan will enjoy certain benefits by virtue of being the hosts,” said the source, as quoted by the Telegraph.
The Champions Trophy was set to be played in Pakistan, however, the BCCI refused to send the team to the country. The BCCI and PCB had long negotiations after which it was decided that the Champions Trophy will be played in a hybrid model, with India's matches in Dubai. It was also accepted that all matches featuring India and Pakistan in an ICC event will be played at a neutral venue till 2027.
India and Pakistan are clubbed in Group A along with New Zealand and Bangladesh. India will play their first match against Bangladesh on February 20 before playing Pakistan on February 23. Their last league game will be against New Zealand on March 2.
