The BCCI is reportedly looking to appoint a batting coach who will be working under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Cricbuzz has reported that few names are being considered for the top job. If appointed, the new batting coach will work along with Abhishek Nayar, T Dilip, Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel.
As the fans wait for an official update from the BCCI, Kevin Pietersen has thrown his bat in the ring. The England legend is ready to work under Gambhir and has sent an 'available' message to the BCCI. The former England captain showed his interest in the job with a comment on X.
India don't have a designated batting coach. Abhishek and ten Doeschate are assistant coaches while Morkel and Dilip work as bowling and fielding coaches, respectively.
Pietersen had a long career for England and he played 104 Tests and 136 ODIs. He scored 8181 runs in the red-ball cricket. The right-handed batsman scored 4440 runs in ODIs.
Pietersen was part of the Paul Collingwood-led England team which won the 2009 T20 World Cup. He played 37 T20Is. The 44-year-old retired from the game in 2018.
Pietersen took up commentary after retirement and is a regular visitor to India for commentary duties during IPL. Pietersen played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rising Pune Supergiant and Delhi Capitals (then known as Delhi Daredevils) in the T20 league.
Big challenge for India's coaching staff
Team India's coaching staff's future could be under question if India struggle in the 2025 Champions Trophy. India have been struggling since Gambhir's appointment as the head coach.
The Men in Blue lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka after 27 years in 2024. Later in the year, New Zealand whitewashed India in the three-match Test series. India kicked off the Australia tour with a win but lost the five-match series 1-3.
