Gautam Gambhir has had a forgettable stint as India's head coach so far and the team's performance has gone from bad to worse. India suffered an ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka last year. It was their first ODI series defeat against the island nation in 27 years.
New Zealand ended India's home domination and whitewashed them 3-0 in the Test series. It was India's first home Test series defeat in 12 years. India pulled off a heist in Perth and kicked off the Australia tour with a win. But they failed to win a game after that.
The visitors lost the five-match Test series 1-3. The BCCI recently conducted a review meeting after the Australia series. Gambhir will coach India in the Champions Trophy. His future could be under question if India struggle in the ICC event.
A few days after the review meeting, India Today has reported that Gambhir spoke about the indiscipline in the dressing room. He reportedly wants to root out the indiscipline in Team India.
"Gautam Gambhir, during the review meeting, spoke about indiscipline in the Indian dressing room following the loss in the Border-Gavaskar series. Indiscipline is the reason why the BCCI is reverting to pre-COVID rules, allowing two weeks of family presence on tour. Gautam and the players were on the same page regarding the topic of family stays," a source was quoted as saying by India Today.
Gambhir hasn't made a public comment since returning to India. Meanwhile, Cricbuzz has reported that the BCCI could appoint a batting coach. India do have two assistant coaches (Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate) but there is no designated batting coach.
Kevin Pietersen has already expressed his interest and he is 'available' to coach Team India. He does commentary in IPL and is a regular visitor to India.
