Karun Nair Breaks Ruturaj Gaikwad's All-Time Record
Nair has now broken Gaikwad's record for the most runs by a captain in a single season of the tournament in history. The 33-year-old has scored 752 runs in the tournament and been dismissed just once and maintains an unprecedented average of 752.
Nair is the first captain to cross the 700-run mark in a season while leading a team in India's premier List A competition. The record was previously held by Gaikwad, who made 660 runs in five innings during the 2022-23 season at an average of 220 with four centuries to his name.

Nair has scored five centuries this season, which is the joint most in a single season alongside Tamil Nadu's N Jagadeesan, who made five tons in the 2022-23 season. Nair has the chance of breaking Jagadeesan's all-time record of most runs in a season (83). If Vidarbha qualifies for the final, a knock of 79 or more will help the right-handed batter climb to first place on the elusive list.
Shaw is the only other to score more than 800 runs in a season during the 2020-21 season. He finished the campaign with 827 runs in eight innings at an average of 165.40 with four centuries. The star opener captained Mumbai in the last four matches of the tournament, including the semi-final and final, after Shreyas Iyer joined the Indian team for the home series against England. He scored three tons and a half-century in his four outings, leading the side to their second title.
During the course of the tournament, Nair also broke the world record for the most runs without being dismissed (542) in List A cricket history.
The Vidarbha skipper played seven Tests and two ODIs for India between 2016 and 2017. He is only the second Indian after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Test cricket after registering the massive milestone against England in 2016 during the Chennai Test.
Nair played for Karnataka till the 2022-23 season before moving to Vidarbha last season. This tournament marks the first instance of him leading the side in any format.
